How much storage do you need?
Tell us what you shoot and how much. We’ll estimate the storage, backup and network your team needs, and what it could cost.
Your shoot and your estimate
Estimate · Your setup
- Footage
- 6.6 TBa month, at 737 Mb/s (332 GB an hour).
- Studio storage
- 120 TBof usable space, with 20% kept free so it stays fast. Local Storage
- Offsite backup
- 105 TBThe first copy would take about 4 months at 100 Mbps, so our engineers would collect it on drives. Offsite Backup
- Network
- 10GbEto each desk. Each editor needs about 345 MB/s (2.8 Gbps), more than 1GbE can carry. Your storage needs 25GbE for everyone at once (about 11 Gbps). Internal Networking
- Cloud storage
- from £130a month + VAT. Cloud Storage
- Offline archive
- 4 drivesa year (about 80 TB of footage), kept in our data safe from £40 a month + VAT. Offline archive

SC.02 How we work it out
The small print
- Data rates
- Published figures from Apple, Avid, ARRI, Blackmagic Design, Canon, RED and Sony at 25 fps, scaled to your frame rate. Long GOP formats (such as XAVC S, XF-AVC Long GOP, H.264 and H.265) stay the same from 24p to 30p, and we allow 1.5 times as much at 50p or 60p. Real files can run a few percent over, so choose “Custom data rate” to enter your camera’s own figure
- Working space
- Your footage, plus 20% for renders, cache and proxies
- Free space
- 20% of your studio storage is kept free, so it stays fast
- Offsite backup
- One copy of everything on your storage, plus 10% for earlier versions
- First backup
- Worked out at 80% of your upload speed. If it would take more than two weeks, our engineers collect it on drives instead
- Network
- Each desk allows three video streams at once (a typical edit: two camera angles plus B-roll) and 25% more for network overhead, scrubbing and caching. Formats too heavy for three streams over 25GbE are edited from proxies, so the desk is sized for one stream of the camera files. Links are judged by what they really carry: 1GbE about 100 MB/s, 10GbE about 900 MB/s, 25GbE about 1,400 MB/s to one computer. The link to your storage is sized for every editor at their busiest at the same time, and is 10GbE unless the team needs more
- Offline archive
- A year of footage on 20 TB drives, kept offline in our data safe
- Prices
- Cloud Storage is sold in blocks of 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 TB (from £130 to £1,300 a month), and the estimate uses the smallest block that holds a month of your footage, with up to 15 users included (then £2 per user a month). Offline archive is £10 per drive a month, plus £32 per recovery request. Studio storage, backup and networking are quoted for your setup. All prices exclude VAT
- Units
- 1 TB = 1,000 GB. Data rates are in megabits per second (Mb/s): 8 bits make a byte
Every studio is different, so treat this as a starting point rather than a quote. Talk to us and we’ll size it properly with you. For the reasoning behind the numbers, read how much storage a 4K project needs and Do I need 10GbE?
